On October 31st The National Autistic Society Scotland (NAS Scotland), part of the UK’s leading charity for people with autism and their families launched the make school make sense campaign. The campaign aims to exert pressure on the Executive and local authorities, and work with them to deliver improvements to education for children with autism. It seeks to engage, support and empower individuals to lobby for change.

As part of the campaign NAS Scotland wishes to recognise and celebrate those who have supported people with autism to achieve their potential at school. make school make sense heroes have been nominated by parents or children, who feel that their hero has made a real difference to their experiences at school or college.

Tina Millar

Tina Millar - Autism Hero! One such hero is Tina Millar, Head of Support Base at Greenhills Primary School, East Kilbride, who has been nominated by Elaine Mckelvie and her son Sean, aged 12 years.

Tina also has the special honour of being only the third person in the country to be nominated for the award.

Elaine said: "After my son was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, the school he was at were not sympathetic. Tina helped me to understand that my son just needed time during the day 'to be autistic'. She runs the autistic class in the school as well as a general special needs base. She is a wonderful person who parents call a rottweiler because she will fight for your child!

The atmosphere in Greenhills is great and I knew it was right for Sean when, after his first day there, he came home and said that he had a brilliant day at school. This was the first tiem I had ever heard him say that as before he was reluctant to even go to school. "

Talking of receiving the award, Tina said: "I am accepting this award as part of a team, as it is down to everyone's involvement that we can make a difference. To help children we have to make the curriculum fit them and not the other way around. It's amazing what you can do when you put children at the forefront."

Dr Robert Moffat, NAS Scotland Regional Officer said: “make school makes sense heroes is a great way for people with autism and their families to recognise those individuals who have made that vital difference to their education. Our campaign seeks to spread examples of good practice across Scotland so that every child with autism can have the education that they deserve.”

Our thanks go to the East Kilbride News an East Kilbride Mail for helping us highlight Tina's great work!
