Swimming
The Child and Family Disability Resource Team have liaised with South Lanarkshire Leisure Services to improve access to swimming pools for children with ASD. Swimming lessons are available for children and young people with ASD. Coaches with basic autism awareness training provide swimming sessions. There is a high teacher pupil ratio of one adult to two children and swimming groups are carefully identified in advance. Lessons are offered in a five-day (Monday-Friday) block during school holiday periods. The times and venues are dependent on demand. Once a child has enrolled on the programme they are able to access new sessions provided it is agreed by all involved that the child is benefiting from the swimming lessons.
The Child and Family Disability Resource Team make applications for this programme to the Swimming Development Officer. Parents wishing to access this service are asked to complete an application and information form which can be obtained from the Child and Family Disability Resource Team who will forward the application to Leisure Services. This form must be submitted before the end of the school holiday prior to the first requested session. (e.g. Summer referrals must be made prior to the end of the Easter holiday). However, if ongoing one-one lessons are required, the appropriate form must also be submitted at the pool.
The Child & Family Disability Resource Team promote this service and co-ordinate information gathering and evaluation as well as providing staff with basic Autism Awareness Training
Young people in receipt of D.L.A are eligible for a ‘Leisure For All’ concession card.
